Tender sliced cinnamon apples, topped with a buttery brown sugar oatmeal crumble and finished off with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream makes for the perfect Fall treat!
One of my favorite memories I have growing up is coming home from school and wondering what smell was going to hit me in the face as I opened the front door. 😉 My mom’s delicious apple crisp wafting through the house is one of my best Fall memories. It’s the perfect comfort food! It’s cozy, it’s a great classic, and the combination of hot buttery fruit crisp and cold vanilla bean ice cream can’t be beat.
This isn’t my mom’s exact recipe, but I took her’s and recreated it a bit. My palate has changed a lot since those picky teenage years so I added some warm spices to oomph it up and it’s perfect. All my favorite Fall flavors combined into this delicious sweet, warm and mouth watering crisp!
Make sure you slice the apples really thin and that way they’ll bake evenly and tender each time. Every oven seems to be heated differently so if you notice that your topping is browning too quickly, go ahead and place some foil on top. It will still come out delicious. I used a mix of granny smith and gala apples because I love the tart and sweet but you can use whatever apples you have on hand.
Yield: 6 servings
INGREDIENTS
- 4 apples, 2 granny smith & 2 gala, peeled & sliced thin
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 4 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
TOPPING
- 3/4 cup cold butter, cut into cubes
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup oatmeal
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS
APPLES
- Heat the oven to 375F and spray a 9”x9” pan with nonstick spray; set aside.
- Place melted butter in a medium mixing bowl and whisk in flour, heavy cream, and vanilla until smooth.
- Add in the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and whisk again until smooth.
- Add the apples and fold gently to combine it well.
- Spread the apples mixture in the bottom of the baking dish and set aside.
CRUMBLED TOPPING
- In a large bowl, add flour, oatmeal, sugar, cinnamon and salt and stir it all together until completely mixed.
- Add the butter cubes and begin to cut in the butter using a pastry cutter. Use a slight downward twisting motion until the mixture is crumbly in texture. There should be no large pieces of butter remaining. If you don’t have a pastry cutter, you can also use 2 forks or even just your hands to cut butter into mixture.
- Using your fingers, sprinkle the crumble evenly over the apples, occasionally pressing some of it into clumps.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling around the edges of the pan.
- Cool for 5-10 minutes to let it set and serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
